Q: What's the Difference Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

A: The simplest answer lies in the educational background required for each profession. A psychiatrist has a degree in medicine and a psychologist has a doctoral-level degree in psychology. Psychologists provide therapy, testing, and sometimes forensic services. Psychiatrists are physicians that have specific training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. They typically focus their work on the prescription and management of psychotropic medications.

Q: Do Psychiatrists Provide Therapy Services?

A: No. Psychiatrists do not provide therapy during the evaluation or medication management appointment. A therapy appointment would be scheduled with one of our psychologists. The psychiatrist’s main goal is to obtain a thorough medical and psychological history in order to make the safest and most effective medication recommendations. The psychiatrist may also recommend against medication.

Q: I Already have a Therapist or Psychologist.
Can She Collaborate with the Psychiatrist?

A: Yes. In fact, it’s very important and essential to collaborate care with your therapist.

Q: What Should I Expect from a Psychiatric Consultation?

A: After reviewing your child’s history, symptoms, and concerns, a treatment plan will be established. Often, treatment includes both therapy and medication management. So after setting up an appropriate therapy referral (if needed), a detailed review of medication options (including benefits, warnings and side effects) will be performed.

Q: What Should I Bring to My First Psychiatrist Appointment?

A: Bring previous records, current medications, and intake forms. All minors should be accompanied by their legal guardian, who can provide history and consent for treatment.

Q: What About Negative Side Effects?

A: All medications, including over-the-counter meds, can have side effects. And while there are norms, the effects can range from minor (like nausea) to more severe, life-threatening issues. Because medications can affect different kids in different ways, it’s important to find a psychiatrist who understands and is experienced specifically with children’s meds. A quality psychiatrist knows careful supervision and clear communication are essential while monitoring medication effects. Your provider will review all these details and work to achieve your child’s optimal balance between benefits and side effects. (And as with any healthcare professional, any changes or concerns with your child should be discussed immediately with your psychiatrist so these issues can be quickly addressed.)

Q: I Feel Guilty About Giving My Child Medication.
Will It “Change” My Child?

A: Behavioral therapy isn’t always enough to achieve significant and positive change. Genetic and biological factors, among other things, can come into play. When coupled with therapy, medication can sometimes be a family’s best option. Also, medication isn’t meant to “change” your child, but rather bring more of a balance to his emotions and behavior.

Q: How Do I Know if My Child Needs Medication?

A: Setting up an initial consultation is always a good idea if you need help but aren’t sure how to proceed. Our doctors can discuss your concerns and goals, and collaborate on a solution which includes the services that make the most sense for your family.
